There are three types of photo collections - those in albums, those in boxes and those on refrigerator doors. Refrigerator photos are for people who think outside the box.

I don’t like having my picture taken. If a picture is worth a thousand words, there are millions of words available to show why I don’t like it.

Because I believe in doing unto others as I would have them do unto me, I don’t take pictures. My husband is the family photographer. John puts the “am” in amateur photographer and loves taking candid pictures.

My definition of a candid picture is one taken without permission or premeditation. Candid pictures of kids are cute. Candid pictures of adults usually aren’t.

In order to enjoy opera, you have to know a number of very simple, straight-forward TECHNICAL things about it. (This may surprise some people; but, really, in my experience, when introducing folks to opera, I’ve found (repeatedly) I have to cover the very basics, however briefly.

A libretto (plural: libretti) is THE LYRICS. Like, ALL of them. Plus, it includes some very basic blocking (who’s on the stage, who’s picking up what from the table, who’s going after whom with a dagger, that kind of thing).

Manga - The Japanese Comic Book Era

Manga is a Japanese word which when translated to English becomes “comic book.” When referring to manga, anyone not from Japan is talking of a Japanese comic book. These are cartoons drawn and published on paper. Like in the U.S. with Superman and Spiderman, manga in Japan has its stars.

Osamu Tezuka is referred to as the god of manga. He created Astro Boy, following from the inspiration of Walt Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse and Bambi. You can see the inspiration in his characters’ large eyes that allows the artist to show much expressive emotions within the story line.

Tezuka created the genre known as Mecha, which is fictional machinery and robots in humanoid form. The animated forms of manga have become very popular in the anime arena, but they began as comic books.

In some of these cultures the women get the tattoos as a way to show off various skills, like basket weaving, food gathering and to show they are suitable for marriage.

The Gambler

“Care to make a wager?” I said this to a friend during a discussion we were having. He quickly responded that, he was sure that I knew he wasn’t a gambling man. His answer completely took me by surprise. I was utterly stumped. Here was a man, I thought, who reaps the benefits of a democratic, capitalist society and he was saying that he did not gamble.

So, I inquired, “What is gambling?”

“I just don’t bet and stuff like that,” he responded.
